Digital Literacy and Its Importance in Classrooms

There are tremendous benefits brought about by the digital world. It easily provides a platform where people can get connected, and one that makes collaboration possible too. Today, technological advancements have permeated almost every aspect of everybody’s lives. Employers now expect the workforce to possess all the necessary skills to work, live, and basically thrive in a society that is almost all-digital. Peter Gale Headmaster knows all about the importance of digital literacy in the modern classroom. Having been involved in the education system for 20 years, he hopes to emphasize how there is a more pressing need for schools to incorporate technology in classes effectively.

One obvious driver for schools should be making sure that the pupils are going to be employable. This is why as early as now, they need to be inculcated with the necessary digital skills. This does not only mean IT proficiency though. This also means having the critical thinking skills needed to be able to behave the right way in online environments. This also means having a good understanding of the shared issues that may be created as a result of digital technologies.

Digital literacy is necessary for students to learn how to be more responsible on how they will use technology when they interact with the rest of the world. Despite the industrial revolution that is expected to have an effect on all economies and industries around the country, the education policy in the UK is really lagging when it comes to preparing pupils for becoming the new breed for the workplace.

There is also a rise in anxious and unhappy children along with the increase in the trend of internet usage. Still, it is important to note that for students to thrive and survive in a world that is already internet dominated, digital literacy should be regarded as something as important as writing and reading.

Deep learning should be considered as a very crucial component when it comes to digital literacy. Making sure that the right skills are present is important too. In order to achieve it, there is a need to incorporate creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, character, and communication.

It is important to note that the online world does come with inherent risks. This is especially true for kids. While it is true that the younger generation may be considered natives to the digital world, when it comes to safety online, they may be that literate still. This is why, there is a pressing need to get them properly educated with the things that they are supposed to do to not only properly utilise the digital platform, but to also conduct themselves the right way when using it. It is the job of the educators to make sure that these concepts are properly discussed as part of the curriculum for digital literacy.
